| Rush in Houston |

Seven days ago Jenna, Roth, and myself set out from Gulf Breeze ,Florida to make the 9 hour drive to Houston, Texas. Our goal was simple, to see Rush perform in concert.. At the last minute before we left, we decided to take my mother's van which turned out to be a brilliant choice. I drove the entire way there, and we made pretty good time coming into Houston. Once we got in however, we got very lost in the total labrynth of a highway system surrounding the city. Lisa was able to figure out where we were enough to get us back on track. A trip that should have taken a little more than nine hours ended up in the thirteen hour area. I really liked my cousin's apartment and the area that it was in. We ended up blowing up airmatresses, watching Mean Girls and then going to sleep. I got up at 8:AM to wait for the FEDEX guy to deliver our tickets. The envelope needed a signature and I didn't want to risk him moving on, and taking the tickets back to local FEDEX distribution center. The tracking website said that they would arrive no later than ten thirty, and they arrived at just that time. We spent the day bumming around the area that my cousin lives. It's a pretty cool place, the buildings are pretty old and there is a pretty large shopping area close by. I actually would like to go back just to visit and to look around the city. We didn't get the chance to see much. We left for the concert around two hours before it started. We hit a pretty rough patch of rush hour traffic which was a nightmare for all of us. We did get there with some time to spare. Our seats were amazing. We were in row S, and had an awesome view of all three of the members of the band. Before the concert was extremely exciting. I was thrilled that Jenna seemed to be as excited as I was. This was the second time I would see them this summer having seen them on their opening concert for the tour in Atlanta with my mother, brother, and cousin Lisa. In any case, they opened with "Limelight" and what followed was one of the most amazing experiences of my entire life. I really don't know how to describe what it meant to be standing in the ampitheater with thousands of other fans. Neil, Alex, and Geddy all performed so perfectly together. You almost wouldn't believe it if you just listened recordings of their music, but to see them actually perform so flawlessly was incredible. They played quite a bit from their new album, Snakes and Arrows. I really like all of it, and they seemed to play the Snakes and Arrows material with a little more energy than the other songs. This could be misleading to say because they really played everything at such a high level of professionalism, perfection, and energy that each number could only be assessed in varying degrees of how absolutely amazing it was just to be there. Their set was as follows.
Set 1 1. Limelight 2. Digital Man 3. Entre Nous 4. Mission 5. Freewill 6. The Main Monkey Business 7. The Larger Bowl 8. Secret Touch 9. Circumstances 10. Between The Wheels 11. Dreamline Intermission Set 2 12. Video Intro 13. Far Cry 14. Workin' Them Angels 15. Armor And Sword 16. Spindrift 17. The Way The Wind Blows 18. Subdivisions 19. Natural Science 20. Witch Hunt 21. Malignant Narcissism 22. Drum Solo 23. Hope 24. Distant Early Warning 25. The Spirit Of Radio 26. Tom Sawyer Encore 27. One Little Victory 28. A Passage to Bangkok 29. YYZ
I am starting to think that Rush is simply the best rock band to exist. After seeing them in concert twice, the evidence only reinforces my belief. I would also like to point out that on the way there, and back not only did I drive the whole way, but we also listened to Rush's discography in order of their release dates. Roth and I were profoundly surprised by how much we liked their second to latest album entitled Vapor Trails. In fact, when we got to my house we had only gotten to the tenth track on the album, but the three of us decided to wait out in the car and listen to the rest of the album. It was brilliant, and our entire trip was a success. |

It's nearly three in the morning. Roth left earlier today for Tallahassee and I spoke to him a little bit via AIM this evening. He seems settled, although I know he's probably in for somewhat of a rough week. I was not all-together crazy about FSU my first couple of weeks there. I found that two things really made it worth it in the beginning. Dr. Robert Arp's philosphy of science class, and Sarah Corrigan. I hope he finds something similar. I am slightly apprehensive about returning this semester as well. This summer has been absolutely fantastic and I have been able to do basically whatever I want. I have seen my favorite band twice as well as the capitals of many scandinavian countries. I have been able to spend more time with my wonderful cousin Lisa this summer than perhaps any time earlier in my entire life. Unfortunately, she's out in Houston now. Although, if she has to live so far away, I'm glad it is in a place that she seems to be happy with. When Jenna, Roth, and myself visited her there a few days ago, she seemed really content, and the area in which she lives is awesome. I am really too tired to write here now, but I wanted to get some thoughts down before I go to sleep. Hopefully I'll get into the habit of this self-indulgent hobby so that I can chronicle the semesters ahead.
This is a reminder for myself to write some about the Rush concert, and the trip that I took to see them for the second time. |

Yesterday, I started the day by waking up early and getting on an airplane. I took two planes to get from Pensacola to Cleveland (stopping in Tampa). I ate a Bacon Cheeseburger in a Sports Bar. I went to a Cleveland Indians game. After the game there was a fireworks show set to Rock and Roll that lasted for little less than a half hour. |
